Russia supports Annan as UN, AL envoy to Syria

yesterday.
“We expect the work of this respectable politician would facilitate solutions to the acute political and humanitarian problems in Syria,” ministry spokesman Alexander Lukashevich said in a statement.
He stressed that the solutions should be worked out on the basis of works with all sides in the interest of a peaceful settlement through comprehensive political dialogue between the Syrian government and the opposition.
Moscow is ready to work together with Annan in search of generally-acceptable solutions to the problems, Lukashevich said.
Expressing serious concern about the humanitarian situation, it said Annan should work with both sides in the conflict and search for a peaceful solution through dialogue between the Syrian government and the opposition.
“Moscow is seriously concerned about the continuing clashes between government troops and armed groups in a number of populated areas in Syria, above all in the city of Homs,” the foreign ministry said.
“We believe that it is necessary to undertake urgent efforts to end any violence that leads to the death of innocent people.”
Meanwhile, Chairman of the Russian Duma’s Foreign Affairs Committee, Aleksey Pushkov, yesterday considered the so-called “Friends of Syria” group, which met yesterday in Tunis, as an enemy of the Syrian people and not a friend.
“They are friends of the Syrian opposition only and enemies of Syria,” Pushkov told a press conference in Moscow, warning of the repercussions of the scenario the West and the Arab League are following concerning the situation in Syria.
Such a plan might lead to the outbreak of civil war,” he said. — Xinhua/AFP/Sana.
