SA acts vie for European music awards

JOHANNESBURG. — Sixteen leading South African artistes have been shortlisted for a chance to represent their country at the 2013 MTV Europe Music Awards, to be held in Amsterdam in the Netherlands on November 10. People can vote for their favourite South African musical act that will make up the fifth nominee in the best African act category and will go into the vote for the best worldwide act.

The contenders are Toya Delazy, Danny K, Prime Circle, Jack Parow, Zebra & Giraffe, The Parlotones, ChianoSky, Die Antwoord, Goldfish, Shortstraw, Pascal & Pearce, Van Coke Kartel, Gangs of Ballet, Goodluck, Shadow Club and LCNVL.

Delazy, who recently attended the Bet music awards in Los Angeles as a nominee in the best international act category, says she only learnt on Thursday through social media that she had been nominated for the MTV honour.

“I found out when MTV tagged me with their announcement. I was absolutely beside myself with shock and excitement.”
Pop and R&B crooner Danny K said he was thrilled.

“It’s the first time that I am nominated for an international award of this magnitude. I feel very honoured that I was considered. I have waited so long for this level of recognition,” he said.

The contenders face stiff competition — most of them have reached the zenith of the South African music industry.
“It’s going to be tough choosing only one of us, but it’s important for me not to doubt myself because to be among these successful artistes, I also must be doing something right,” said Danny K. — Sunday World.
