CAPE Town-based sungura artist, Moses “Themba Dhewa Moyo” Mabika, is appealing for financial assistance to release his debut album, which he has failed to unveil, for five years.
The 30-year-old Chihota born artist said he was determined to conquer.
Mabika said the journey has been a difficult one as he is failing to release his first album due to financial difficulties.
“All my efforts to get sponsorship to record music hit a brick wall until I met Forward Antonio, a former dancer with Alick Macheso.
“He connected me to Widzi Katoko and George Chembe, who had a studio in Harare.
“I paid them for my first recording and he was impressed with the sound they produced for me.
“They later told me that they had found a good studio, Alema Studios in Zimbabwe, where they recorded songs but due to lack of finances, the songs are yet to be released.
“I can assure my fans and everyone who will listen to my yet-to-be released album called Ndatsikwa Konzi, that this album is fireworks,” he said.
His unreleased songs are enough to make more than 10 albums of, at least, six songs each.
“I am now appealing to well-wishers and music promoters across the globe to help with funds to pay for the release of my recorded songs at Alema Studios.
“I have been performing as a curtain-raiser for several popular Zimbabwean artists in Cape Town, including Mark Ngwazi and Suluman Chimbetu.
“I grew up liking music a lot and, around the late 90s and early 2000s, I used to imitate Macheso.
“People would enjoy the way I imitated Macheso.”
Despite being discouraged from pursuing music, he kept going.
“I taught myself how to play the guitar through listening to Macheso’s music.
“I used to listen to his songs quite attentively and, after listening, I would imitate the song and I always managed to do it perfectly.
“In the year 2009, I left Zimbabwe for South Africa, in search of greener pastures.”
However, it wasn’t a walk in the park for someone without formal education to get a job in South Africa.
“I had to work several odd jobs but my passion for music never faded.”
