THE Southern Africa Region Athletics Cross Country Championships scheduled for Potchefstroom, South Africa tomorrow have been postponed to a later date.
National Athletics Association of Zimbabwe director for development and recruitment Lisimati Phakamile confirmed the development yesterday.
“We just received a confirmation about the postponement of the event from regional president Moses Bhansi today.
“He said there are in-house problems in South Africa who are the host country.
“We are now waiting for the confirmation of the dates,” he said.
The team was expected to assemble in Bulawayo and leave for South Africa today.
Phakamile said the athletes would now have more time to prepare for the regional competition as they had no time to recover from the national finals held in Kadoma on Sunday.
“It will give us more time to fine tune our preparations. We were not going to hold a training camp this time because of time limitations, but now it’s an advantage as athletes can continue training,” said Phakamile.
The senior women’s team has Rosseta Mandevu, Olivia Chitate, Faith and Constance Nyasango.
The senior men’s category team is made up of Isaac Mpofu, Elijah Mabhunu, Wellington Varevi, Jonathan Chinyoka and Munyaradzi Jari.
The athletes were asked to contribute $200 towards the trip and now they have more time to raise it.
