SA man jailed for 25 years after raping, filming and grooming girlfriend’s 9-year-old child

The South African Regional Court in Kathu has sentenced 39-year-old Tebogo Christopher Sebogodi of Siyathemba to an effective 25 years’ imprisonment after he was convicted on charges of rape, creation of child pornography, and child grooming involving a minor in his care.

The conviction has been welcomed by the National Prosecuting Authority, which described the matter as a severe violation of trust and a grave crime against a vulnerable child.

NPA Regional Spokesperson Mojalefa Senokoatsane said Sebogodi was arrested after a disturbing video surfaced showing him sexually abusing the child.

“The disturbing video was discovered by the child’s aunt, who had borrowed the accused’s phone to view photographs. She immediately alerted her mother, leading to the matter being reported to the police,” said Senokoatsane.

Investigations further revealed that the abuse had not been a single incident, but had occurred on multiple occasions while the child’s mother was away, leaving Sebogodi to babysit the victim.

During sentencing proceedings, Regional Court Prosecutor Kekeletso Lekota urged the court to impose the harshest possible punishment, stating that the crimes reflected a “heinous and a grave betrayal of trust.”

“The prosecutor emphasised that the accused had exploited the vulnerability and innocence of a child who had been placed in his care, demonstrating a complete disregard for the victim’s rights, dignity, and well-being. He further argued that the accused posed a danger to society,” Senokoatsane said.

The court imposed 25 years’ imprisonment for rape, with five years suspended, alongside 10 years for creation of child pornography and 10 years for child grooming. The sentences on the latter two counts will run concurrently with the rape sentence, resulting in an effective custodial term.

The NPA reaffirmed its commitment to combating crimes against children, saying such offences “strike at the very fabric of society and violate the constitutional rights, dignity, and safety of our most vulnerable citizens.”

“Through diligent prosecution and strong collaboration with law enforcement, the NPA will continue to prioritise the protection of children and deliver justice for victims and their families. Every successful prosecution sends a strong message that those who prey on children will face the full might of the law,” Senokoatsane said.
