South Africa’s opposition party, the Democratic Alliance’s shadow Home Affairs Minister Mr Haniff Hoosen, visited Beitbridge Border Post on Wednesday to assess operations and challenges at Sadc’s busiest port of entry.
He was accompanied by the party’s leader for Limpopo Provincial Mr Jacques Smalle and the provincial spokesperson on safety and security Mr Katlego Suzan Phala.
In a statement after the oversight tour, Mr Hoosen said there was need for the South African government to attend to issues of capacitating the workers and reviewing operations at the border.
“Today, the DA conducted an oversight inspection of the Beitbridge Border Post in Musina following reports of extremely long queues and increasing incidences of vehicle, explosives and cigarette smuggling,” he said.
He said there was a critical shortage of resources at the border to enhance efficiency and the smooth clearance of human and cargo traffic.
Mr Hoosen said it was important for the government to come up with strategies to curb illegal migration and smuggling around the border.
