IN the vast world of music emerged several artistes who carried power in their voices, addressing various issues through their music.

Their voices transcended borders, gaining recognition on an international stage and broke language barriers and cultures.

They left a legacy that continues to live on in various societies.

One of these musicians is the late Dr Oliver Tuku Mtukudzi whose music told unique stories of oppression, child marriages, gender-based violence and served as a platform for social commentary.

Through this legendary musician’s compositions, South African singer Zawadi Yamungu (Nkosingiphile Mpanza) known for her powerful vocals, mastery of indigenous instruments, found sincerity and depth that inspired him to dream big in his craft although their genres are different.

In an interview with Zimpapers Arts and Entertainment hub, Zawadi said her upcoming album is inspired by the late Mtukudzi.

She said Tuku managed to build a unique identity on the international stage which is her dream.

“I am where I am not only by my own journey but by so many legends and icons who paved the way for us, artists who made sure that they pour out their hearts, share their authenticity and greatness with so much love and dedication.

“Baba, Oliver Mtukudzi really inspired and still do inspire me by how passionate he was in spreading humour, awareness through his music and I will always respect, value and honour him every chance I get.

“Neria is a song so dear to me and here is my heart to you too in honour of the great of our times.

Zawadi added that celebrating the star using his artistic talent is the best way she could ever express herself while paying tribute to him.

“True to his sound and word, through music, he touched on many lives, positively influenced the world. To me he was more than a mentor, a father, a role model.

“The world is both mourning and celebrating such an inspirational icon. He will never be replaced by any other. I am sorry to the Mtukudzi Family.”

Zawadi added that:

“His lyrics often touched on themes of love, social issues, and the resilience of the human spirit. Songs like “Neria” and “Todii” tackled pressing societal concerns, offering messages of hope and encouragement.

“By integrating local vernacular and traditional instruments, he remained true to his roots while appealing to diverse audiences worldwide.

“Mtukudzi’s unique sound, characterized by the use of the marimba and rhythmic guitar, gave him a distinctive voice that cut through the noise of mainstream music.

“He was more than just a musician; he embodied the cultural spirit of Zimbabwe. His performances were full of emotion and energy, captivating audiences and drawing them into his world,” she said.

Zawadi Yamungu (Nkosingiphile Mpanza) is a celebrated South African musician known for her powerful vocals, mastery of indigenous instruments, and her stage name meaning “Gift from God.”
