Zimbabwe 0 – 5 South Africa
ZIMBABWE’s Young Mighty Warriors were brought down by their South African counterparts in the African Union Sports Council Region 5 Under-20 Youth Games match played at Barbourfields Stadium last night. The girls were probably overwhelmed by playing under floodlights. Coming soon after President Mugabe had officially opened the Games, Zimbabwe fell to a hattrick from Mosili Makhoali who scored in the sixth, 27th and 57th minutes. The other goals came from Linda Sepotokele and Gabriel Salgado who weighed in with other goals in the 45th and 60th minute respectively.
Zimbabwe coach Sithethelelwe Sibanda conceded defeat and said her charges lacked international exposure.
“We played second fiddle in most aspects of the game and our lack of international exposure was exposed by our opponents.
“Although we’re now under pressure to win our next match, all hope isn’t lost, not as yet,” said Sibanda.
Her counterpart, Sheryl Botes, expressed delight with the result.
“We knew it was going to be tough since we had little information about our opponents but I’m very happy my charges played well as they pressed their opponents high up and giving the midfield ample time to be creative,” said Botes.
South Africa were tactically and technically superior to Zimbabwe.
