adminJOHANNESBURG. – Four strong South African labour unions have joined in the fray to support striking workers at the South African Breweries, union representative has said.Spokesman for the Food and Allied Workers’ Union, Dominique Swartz, said other unions comprising the National Union of Metalworkers, South African Catering and Commercial and Allied Workers’ Union, South African Football Players’ Union and Creative Workers’ Union and the Progressive Youth Alliance showed solidarity for the quest of striking SAB employees.
“This purpose of the intensified mass actions is to put pressure on SA Breweries to concede to the legitimate and genuine demands of workers,” Swartz said.
Fawu members at SAB have been on a protected strike action since the September 30 in demand of a living wage and improved conditions of employment.
Swartz said his union members were demanding 9 percent while the company offers a conditional 7 percent of which only 4,2 percent goes to actual salary increase.
South African Breweries has more than 60 000 workers nationwide. – CAJ News.
