THE Southern African Development Community (SADC) will next month host a high-level Meeting of the Committee of Ministers of Finance and Investment and the Peer Review Panel in Harare, as the regional bloc intensifies efforts to strengthen economic integration, investment promotion and macroeconomic stability.

The meeting will bring together finance ministers, central bank governors and senior treasury officials from across the region to deliberate on key issues affecting economic development and inclusive growth in Southern Africa.

According to a statement from SADC, the meeting will be chaired by South Africa’s Minister of Finance, Honourable Enoch Godongwana, in his capacity as Chairperson of the SADC Committee of Ministers of Finance and Investment.

The ministers’ meeting will be preceded by a gathering of Senior Treasury and Central Bank Officials on June 29 and 30. The officials will provide technical input and recommendations to guide ministerial discussions.

SADC said the meeting is aimed at strengthening cooperation and coordination in investment, financial and capital market integration as well as macroeconomic surveillance mechanisms to support sustainable economic development across the region.

“The meeting seeks to strengthen cooperation and coordination of investment, financial and capital market integration, and macroeconomic surveillance mechanisms to achieve sustainable economic development and inclusive growth in the SADC region.

“The SADC Protocol on Finance and Investment provides the legal framework for regional cooperation and harmonisation in finance, investment and macroeconomic policy, while emphasising the alignment of Member States’ policies with regional objectives to avoid adverse spill-over effects,” reads the statement.

SADC said recommendations from the gathering “will be submitted to the SADC Council of Ministers and are expected to contribute to the implementation of the SADC Regional Indicative Strategic Development Plan (RISDP) 2020–2030 and the attainment of SADC Vision 2050.”
