The training done under the ARIAL programme imparts capacity building and helps to identify development opportunities and stimulates access to regional information sources on development possibilities.
Zimbabwe Local Government Association president Mr Nimrod Chiminya said the region faces similar service delivery challenges in the areas of water provision, refuse collection, road maintenance and provision of infrastructure for housing and industrial development.
“These challenges require us to work as a team and learn from one another in finding sustainable options for intervention,” he said.
The delegations from Zimbabwe, Zambia, Malawi, Mauritius, Angola, Mozambique, Botswana, Swaziland, South Africa and Namibia are meeting under the auspices of the Southern Africa Regional Organisation — a UCLGA sub-regional local government association that provides a platform for regional integration.
Mr Chiminya said there should be more collaboration between the organisations to achieve “joint programming . . . because none of us has all the solutions to problems of service delivery”.
He said SARO should discuss with ministers of local government from the region to develop a sustainable and responsive local government system.
