The SADC Organ on Politics, Defence and Security Cooperation will meet in Maputo tomorrow to come up with a resolution on the security situation in northern Mozambique.
There are indications preliminary assessments done by a technical team deployed earlier this month are now complete.
“The Extraordinary Organ Troika Summit will receive a report of the Technical Assessment Team that was deployed following the decisions of the SADC Extraordinary Double Troika Summit held on 8th April 2021,” said a statement from the SADC secretariat.
The technical assessment was meant to gauge the level of assistance Mozambique may need to deal with insurgent threats in Cabo Delgado province, where multibillion-dollar gas projects were scheduled to take off.
French energy giant Total has since announced it is temporarily discontinuing its US$20 billion because of the deteriorating security situation.
Reports indicate more than 2700 people have been killed since the insurgency began in 2017.
