SADC member States will be gifted land by the Museum of African Liberation to memorialise the region and Africa’s history during the bloc’s 44th Ordinary Summit to be held in Harare in August.
The land donation is part of the Museum of African Liberation’s inclusive efforts to project elements of the region’s cultural heritage and its collective identity to enable people to keep the memory of the continuities of their struggle against colonialism.
Institute of African Knowledge (Instak) chief executive, Ambassador Kwame Muzavazi, said the gesture was a formal way to make a part of Zimbabwe become a part of SADC with Heads of State and Government witnessing the event.
“We should make a part of Zimbabwe a part of SADC, formally. And during the Summit, the Heads of State and Government will witness the handover of this piece of land for SADC as an organisation,” said Amb Muzavazi.
He said the anticipation to make the gesture a reality is influenced by the need to see Southern Africa’s liberation history being memorialised by its people.
He indicated that the SADC leaders’ visit to the museum will see make them see what is “not being done anywhere else” as a representation of the “culture of resistance by the region”.
“The land will be a gift to erect a monument commemorating and memorialising the collective efforts by countries in the southern part of Africa for the liberation of the rest of Africa. So we expect that to happen.”
“So how good is this establishment to the culture of resistance by the region? This is now a regional, international monument. What is happening here and what we are doing here is not being done anywhere else.”
Amb Muzavazi said the Museum of African Liberation project will undertake more ground-breaking initiatives to inspire millions regionally and internationally.
