Safe streets corner: Your safety, Our priority

As police officers, we often meet victims after a crime has already happened. Our wish is always to prevent that crime from taking place in the first place.

The incidents highlighted in this week’s Police Page carry an important lesson. Criminals often target people who are alone, stranded, unfamiliar with their surroundings or looking for assistance. Sadly, offenders are becoming more cunning and can appear friendly, helpful and trustworthy.

I urge members of the public to avoid travelling at night whenever possible, especially when visiting places where they do not know anyone. If you need directions or assistance, approach uniformed security guards, established businesses, transport operators at recognised ranks or the nearest police station. Avoid following strangers to secluded places, accepting lifts from people you do not know or sharing personal travel plans with strangers.

Parents, guardians and community leaders should also continue educating young people and vulnerable family members about personal safety and the dangers of trusting unknown individuals.

Crime thrives in silence. If you have information about any of the incidents featured in this publication, or any other criminal activities in your area, please come forward. Even the smallest piece of information may help police identify suspects, solve cases and protect future victims.

We also encourage victims who may not have reported crimes to approach the police. Your report matters and could help us uncover patterns that lead to arrests. Members of the public can contact the Bulawayo Police Hotline +263 29 2273547, visit their nearest police station or make use of police suggestion boxes available at police stations.

Together, let us make Bulawayo safer. The police cannot be everywhere, but with your eyes, ears and cooperation, we can defeat crime.
