A new dawn has risen for women’s golf in Matabeleland following the appointment of Sakhile Ndiweni as the new president of the Matabeleland Ladies Golf Union (MLGU). Ndiweni is set to lead the esteemed association for the next two years.

The former Harry Allen Ladies captain brings a wealth of golf administration experience and expertise to lead the ladies’ section of the Matabeleland golf province.

The union has five golf courses under its umbrella: Bulawayo Country Club, Elephant Hills Golf Club, Harry Allen Golf Club, Bulawayo Golf Club, and Hwange Golf Club.

The Matabeleland golf province as a whole is coming off the success of hosting the 2024 All Africa Golf Team Championship at Bulawayo Golf Club in October last year, which was a significant achievement.

Ndiweni said she is ready for the task of promoting the sport of golf in the province, particularly in the ladies’ section.

Due to her passion for the sport, she has been coaching students from the National University of Science and Technology (Nust) and women in industry since 2023.

“We have a few strategies that we have laid out, and indeed we have a packed schedule of initiatives that we will be focusing on to build on the foundations laid by our predecessors.

“Our Matabeleland provincial tournaments will also help draw lady golfers from various parts of the country to come and experience the variety of golf courses we offer,” said Ndiweni.

The esteemed administrator is an accountant at Nust in the Bursars’ department, and her experience in co-ordinating the university’s golf activities has been invaluable in enhancing her golf administration capabilities.

“Golf development is highlighted in the masterplan, and we will work closely with all stakeholders to ensure we deliberately grow the number of junior golfers coming through to our golf courses in the province.

“Teamwork is a strength that we have all agreed will be the backbone of our operations. Our past experiences and successes have all indicated that we will indeed achieve more as a team,” she said.

Ndiweni will be deputised by Heather Attala, with Agness Mutanha assuming the role of treasurer.

The secretary position is yet to be filled. Challotte Tabvuma, Yvonne Jandles, Pat Buckley, and Terry Tshamalala are the club captains representing  various clubs.

“With these women at the helm of MLGU, and with the support of our past ZLGU/MLGU presidents, we are confident that MLGU development programmes will dovetail into the ZLGU national objectives, promoting ladies’ golf to all parts of our beautiful Zimbabwe.

“I am grateful to Nust management for supporting me and uplifting women,” said Ndiweni.
