THIS was Sakubva as they used to know it – full of life, amazing sights and sounds and some decent football on display.
Those were the days when Tanganda was the toast of their city and giants used to come and fall at Sakubva in the first half of the ‘90s.
This was Sakubva as we all want to see it – brimming with life, thousands of fans in the stands and good football on display.
On Saturday, life returned to Sakubva, the way it used to be in the ‘90s, when Lloyd Mutasa and Webster Kurwaisimba were leading the way for Tanganda.
Newboys Scottland rolled into town and suddenly a spark of football life flicked among the residents of Mutare.
They came in huge numbers to support Manica Diamonds and, with a big contingent of travelling fans from Harare backing the Scottland cause, Sakubva had its biggest crowd this season.
There was a Scottland roadshow on the eve of the match just to remind the Mutare residents that this was not going to be an average match.
It was a tight battle but while it didn’t produce a goal, the life in the stands was something else.
The two sets of fans kept taunting each other throughout the match and the Scottland fans left the stadium cursing their misfortune when twice their men hit the goal’s frame.
But Manica Diamonds, inspired by the strong support from their fans, also played well and were worth the point they got.
