Upcoming music group known as Powered to Worship from Sakubva recently recorded an 18-track live DVD dubbed Power to Worship at a colourful ceremony held at the Courtauld Theatre.
The album, which generally talks about the significance of worship in a person’s Christian life, has a fusion of various music genres, among them reggae and jazz. Besides the title track, Power to Worship, the other tracks on the album include Vhula Amasango, Thumba Lelu, Higher level and Zuva Renyasha.
Speaking to The Weekender, the group visionary, Luke Petros, explained the dvd recording as a milestone achievement for the members and expressed hope that it is the beginning of international endeavours. “The recently recorded live dvd is a great achievement for our group. I am confident that very soon we will be competing with renowned groups like the Soweto Gospel Choir and we will go international. Despite coming from humble backgrounds, I am sure God wants something great to come out of Sakubva,”
“Mutare is generally endowed with great talent, but it lacks sponsorship and nurturing. This province is the home of various music greats some of whom are Sam Mataure, Blessing Shumba, CCAP Sakubva Voices, just to mention a few,” said Petros.
Asked to give a brief background about the group, the group co-odinator, Seimar Gijimani, said: “Ours is a story of utmost perseverance. We started last year when we held auditions to form the group. We were then offered a rehearsal venue and instruments by Reverend Chamusarewa of the Full Gospel Church of God. Arts director Mr Henry Tsopotsa also offered us the hall at the Cautauld Theatre whenever we found it necessary to hold shows.”
In spite of their excitement after recording the dvd, Petros and Gijimani lamented the issue of dire financial straits as the major setback inasfar as achieving the group’s dreams is concerned. Said Petros: “Finances remain a thorn in the flesh for us because every step needs money for it to be a success. We are also facing challenges with parents who seem sceptical about respecting talent in their children. Convincing most of those whose children are in the group has been a mammoth task.”
The 30-member group is based in Sakubva but encompasses people from various churches.
The composing of songs is done by the group members and some of the composers are Belinda Nyanhete, Nyasha Jenya and Simon Khoswe.
