SAKUBVA High School cricket team won the 10-overs Mutare Urban High Schools Cricket Development Tournament held at Mutare Sports Club last Saturday.

For their efforts, the team received two pairs of batting pads, two helmets and a bat.

The tournament drew four schools, Sakubva High, Nyamauru High, Mutare Boys’ High and St Dominic’s as well as Mutare Teachers’ College and a select team.

Sakubva High powered to into the finals where they played against Nyamauru High, winning the match by eight-wickets 106/ 103.

Sakubva High’s Tonderayi Chinhoyi scored an impressive 75-runs, becoming the top-scorer of the tournament.

Chinhoyi received a prize for the all-rounder player of the tournament, while his captain, Vincent Masekesa was chosen the best fielder of the tournament.

Nyamauru High’s Takudzwa and Simbarashe Mastana were chosen as the best batsman and best bowler of the tournament respectively.

The tournament, which was organised by the recently elected Manicaland Cricket Association was meant to promote cricket in high schools.

MCA vice-chairperson, Maureen Kuchocha, said the tournament was the first of many to come in the associations’ quest to promote cricket in schools. She said a tournament for primary schools was on the cards.

“The whole purpose of the tournament is to promote the sport in schools and we want to take it to the grassroots.

“At this tournament, there was the provincial high performance coach scouting for potential talent.

“So the tournament becomes a platform for junior players at grassroots level to gain exposure,” said Kuchocha.

Kuchocha said they were, however, still scrounging for financial resources to fund the tournaments which they expect to hold in each district throughout the province.
