Sakubva High School cricket team won the 10 overs Mutare Urban High Schools Cricket Development Tournament held at Mutare Sports Club last Saturday.
For emerging the victors of the tournament, the team walked away with two pairs of batting pads, two helmets and a bet. The teams that participated are Sakubva High, Nyamauru High, Mutare Boys High, St Dominic’s as well as Mutare Teachers’ College.
Sakubva boys made it to the finals after playing so well against Nyamauru and emerging the winners with eight-wickets 106/ 103.
Sakubva’s Tonderayi Chinhoyi scored an impressive 75 runs thus making him the highest scorer of the tournament. Chinhoyi received a prize for coming up the all-rounder of the tournament, while his captain Vincent Masekesa was elected the best fielder of the tournament.
Takudzwa and Simbarashe from Nyamauru were selected as the best batsman and best bowler of the tournament respectively.
The tournament organised by the recently elected Manicaland Cricket Association was meant to promote cricket in the high density schools. MCA vice-chairperson, Maureen Kukocha said the tournament was the first of many to come in the associations’ quest to promote cricket in schools and the same for primary schools was in the pipeline.
Great sportsmen are created in their young age thus building the spirit in the school going kids.
In some of the sports that were played during the weekend, Musani High walked away with a trophy in the Goko Sports Gala at a tournament held at Nyunga School, while Mutare Boys scooped the silver medal at the NASH games held in Marondera.
For the nation to have better teams in the future, it is advisable for coaches from higher leagues to come and watch the raw talent on show at the schools as it is where they can discover the gift that the school kids have.
