A BLACKTOE Sports Shop sales representative is being accused of working with a man, masquerading as a doctor, to dupe people who intend to go and work in the United Kingdom.
Marylin Mangwende (27), could not stop crying as the investigating officer testified against her in a fraud case she is facing. She appeared before Harare magistrate Evelyn Mashavakure who remanded her in custody to today for her bail application continuation.
Mangwende is accused of working with a man, who is masquerading as Doctor Calisto Manyati, to defraud people who intend to move to the UK for health care jobs.
The fake doctor is on the run.
Marange said Mangwende was not a proper candidate for bail as she could interfere with witnesses and also influence Manyati to flee.
“When we arrested Mangwende, she texted the second accused person that she had been arrested and from there, the man is evasive and it is our fear that if she is released she will team up with him and continue duping unsuspecting people,” he said.
He told the court that the real Doctor Manyati was outside the country and lost his particulars in 2018 during a smash-and-grab incident.
It is alleged that the duo posted an advert on Facebook advising people that they could help them get jobs in the UK.
The State said on March 16, Jacqueline Mhuka doubted the duo’s capacity after they had promised to facilitate the issuance of a certificate of sponsorship for her daughter.
It is alleged that the man, who was using Doctor Manyati’s documents, including national identity card, advised Mangwende to go and collect money for a certificate of sponsorship from Mhuka.
The investigating officer Morgan Marange said when Mangwende went to Mhuka she told her that she was Marylin Manyati, pretending to be Doctor Manyati’s wife.
Mhuka had alerted the police who arrested Mhuka.
Zebedia Bofu appeared for the State.
