ZIMBABWE’S senior men’s national cricket team coach, Justin Sammons, believes a focus on fundamentals will be key as his side looks to level their two-match Test series against South Africa.
After a heavy 328-run defeat in the opener, the Chevrons are preparing for the decider at Queens Sports Club, starting tomorrow at 10am.
Sammons stressed the importance of execution, urging his team to avoid giving opportunities to the Proteas.
“Test cricket is not complicated. It’s really about doing the basics better and for longer than the opposition.
From a bowling perspective, that’s exactly what the best bowler on display — Codi Yusuf — did in the first Test. He was relentless in executing the basics. That’s what we need to do.
“When we were on top, we gave them freebies that allowed them to get away from us. We need to cut out those bad deliveries, especially from the spinners. In terms of batting, it’s about understanding the conditions and applying ourselves and our game plan accordingly.
We know the boxes we need to tick — it’s just a matter of getting out there and doing it. We must stick to the basics,” said Sammons.
The team was given a day off post-first Test to ensure they are mentally refreshed. Attention now turns to Brian Bennett, the 21-year-old opener who missed the end of the last match due to concussion protocols.
While technically eligible for selection this weekend, Sammons stated they will not risk him if there’s any lingering concern.
“We’ll be fresh going into this Test. We gave the guys a day off to ensure they are mentally switched on for what lies ahead. It will come down to us executing our plans.
We’ll wait and see regarding team changes. I’m not going to reveal anything at this stage, but certainly, if there’s still any risk involved, Bennett won’t be playing,” he said.
Zimbabwe is still seeking their first-ever Test victory against South Africa, who have won eight of their nine previous encounters.
Meanwhile, the World Test Championship holders have made changes, with all-rounder Wiaan Mulder taking over captaincy from the injured Keshav Maharaj, and Senuran Muthusamy joining the squad.
