THE Southern African Teachers’ Association (Sato) annual games kick off at the United College of Education in Bulawayo this morning.
More than 1 000 teachers from nine Southern African countries will be competing in nine disciplines namely football, netball, basketball, volleyball, athletics, darts, tennis, table tennis and chess from today up to Wednesday. They will also be exchanging notes on various issues to do with their profession.
“It’s all systems go for our games. We will have the official opening ceremony tomorrow (today) morning that will be addressed by the Sato president from Zambia as well as the acting Bulawayo Provincial Education Director Olicah Kaira,” said the Zimta public relations manager, Daisy Zambuko.
Zimta is the hosting association with teachers’ organizations from Zambia, Lesotho, South Africa, Swaziland, Botswana, Malawi, Tanzania, Namibia as well as Zimbabwe all represented.
“Besides the games aspect, this is a platform for the teachers to exchange notes and share their experiences about the profession as well as information on the education sector. On Wednesday we will have a cultural night at the Large City Hall,” said Zambuko.
The Sato games are held annually and bring together teams from different countries in the Southern Africa region.
Zimta held their selection games at the same venue last week when provincial teams from the 10 provinces battled it out over three days.
