CRESTA College, a private school in Gwanda, Matabeleland South Province, was plunged into deep mourning following the sudden death of an 18-year-old Form Four student who was a gifted soccer player.

The boy, Leo Ncube, from Jotsholo in Lupane, Matabeleland North Province had enrolled at the school last year on a sports scholarship. Cresta College, a school offering education from Form 1 to Form 6, is owned by the Ranaka Group of Companies, led by Norman Mugiya.

A teacher at the school Tedius Revesai said the death came as a shock, especially considering it followed a short illness. He said the school and the nation have lost a young, talented soccer player who was very loyal, respectful, and obedient.

“The boy died after a short illness, having suffered from headaches and persistent vomiting. He has been a student at Cresta College on a sports scholarship since January 2023 and he was now in Form Four and waiting to write his O-level exams. Unfortunately, he passed away on the 19 June. We take comfort from the fact that he was doing what he loved, he knew he was loved, and he was surrounded by friends,” said Revesai.

Leo was buried on Saturday (22 June), at his rural homestead in Jotsholo in Lupane.

“The school fully sponsored the burial, including transporting students and teachers to and from the burial. This is our culture as a school. We are not only concerned about business, but the welfare of our stakeholders matters most to us,” he said
