School head in court to answer charges of maize theft

A DEPUTY headmaster at Kriste Mambo High School is alleged to have connived with three supporting staff members to steal more than two tonnes of maize from the school. Joseph Munhuweyi (50), the deputy head of Kriste Mambo High School is jointly charged with James Chasiya (42), a guard employed by Fawcett, a workshop supervisor, John Magosvongwe (45) and a general hand, George Mugodo (42).

Chasiya is also facing another charge of stealing 125 litres of diesel meant for the school generator.

The quartet which is being represented by Rusape-based lawyer, Mr Maxwell Chiwanza of Chiwanza and Partners is out of custody and was not asked to plead when it appeared before Rusape provincial magistrate, Mr Shingi Mutiro recently.

Public prosecutor, Ms Event Dhliwayo, told the court that the four on different occasions stole bags of maize from the school’s store-room and hired transport to carry the maize to Rusape town.

“On dates unknown to the prosecutor, but from October 15, 2015 to January 1, 2016, Magosvongwe and Mugodo on different occasions stole 55x50kgs of shelled maize from the school store-room and loaded them into the school tractor, while Chasiya performed guard duties at the school.

“Mugodo on different occasions drove the tractor to the grinding mill, while Chasiya and Magosvongwe followed. The four accused shared the 55x50kgs bags of maize equally. Chasiya on different occasions hired Manyuchi, Makamure and Gwenzi transport to ferry the stolen bags to Evergreen Market in Rusape.

“The value of the stolen maize is $1 155 and nothing was recovered,” she said.

Ms Dhliwayo further told the court that Chasiya operating alone allegedly stole 125 liters of diesel meant for the school generator and sold it to transporters. The value of the stolen diesel is $142 and nothing was recovered. The matter was adjourned to today (Friday).
