School kids connect with Zim-Asset

Everyone, including school pupils, has a role to play in successfully implementing the Zimbabwe Agenda for Sustainable Socio Economic Transformation, a senior Government official has said.

At the ZimRights National High Schools Choral Competition prize-giving ceremony in Harare yesterday, director for international communication services in the Information, Media and Broadcasting Services Ministry Dr Ivanhoe Gurira said: “From a scientific perspective, it is believed that when young children listen to familiar words in songs, the neutral transmitters in their brains are firing away, and their brains are building connections to the sounds they are hearing and the words they are singing.

“A kind of connection we hope as Government to establish in all Zimbabweans towards Zim-Asset.”

Dr Gurira, who stood in for Information Minister Professor Jonathan Moyo, said the competition — themed “Kubudirira kwe Zim-Asset, ndini newe” — helped schools appreciate the economic blueprint.

“Singing songs and reciting poems and rhymes with children helps them develop early literacy skills. Listening to different types of music nurtures self-esteem and encourages creativity, self-confidence, and curiosity.

“It is, therefore, commendable that the organisers of this choral competition, ZimRights, found this creative mode of making our junior citizens participate in the achievement of national development goals.

“We congratulate ZimRights for coming up with this brilliant piece of music which undoubtedly will go a long way towards spreading knowledge on Zim Asset. Zim Asset is not about politicking. It is about the betterment of the lives of all Zimbabweans regardless of class, gender, political affiliation or any kind of classification,” he added.

Thirteen schools participated, with St Patricks High School (Gweru) emerging the winner while Highfield High 1 (Harare) and Zengeza High 1 (Chitungwiza) took second and third places, respectively.
