A Mlezu Primary School boy from the Chiwundura area is battling for life at Gweru Provincial Hospital after being axed on the head by an unknown assailant while on his way to school.
Acting Midlands provincial police spokesperson Sergeant Xolani Dube confirmed the incident.
He said the motive behind the attack on the innocent boy remained unknown.
“I can confirm that we are investigating a matter in which Jayden Mzila (9) of Mzila village, Chief Chiwundura, was seriously attacked with an axe today (Tuesday) around 6:30am,” he said.
Sgt Dube said when the incident occurred, Mzila was in the company of his young brother and sister on their way to Mlezu Primary School where they learn.
He said an unknown male adult allegedly came from behind an anthill and struck him with an axe on the head.
“Mzila allegedly fell down and started bleeding severely and the unknown suspect ran away from the scene into a bush,” said Sgt Dube.
He said Mzila’s brother and sister informed their uncle who then took him to Chiwundura Rural Health Care Centre for medical attention before he was transferred to Gweru Provincial Hospital.
“His condition is said to be very serious,” said Sgt Dube.
The matter has been reported to the police, but the suspect remains at large.
“Police in Chiwundura are seized with the matter and are keen to bring the suspected culprit to book,” said Sgt Dube. “Police are appealing to members of the community who might have information that may lead to the arrest of the suspect to make a report to any police station or make use of suggestion boxes nearer to them.”
