It has been an amazing run for other sports such as rugby, hockey and athletics during the first term which was full of fun-filled festivals.
Last week, soccer training sessions began and schools teams are geared to embark on competitive festivals and knockouts that take place every year towards the end of the season.
Cool Lifestyle visited Chipadze High School in Bindura last week and had a rare opportunity to share the excitement of the fast looming soccer season with some football fanatics from the school. George Gombora (17), a Form Four student, said the soccer season is the most exciting on the school’s sports calendar.
He said during this term he prefers to pay more attention to football than his school work.
“Soccer is the best and I can see myself achieving big things if I pursue passion. This is going to be one of my best moments should my school make it to the national finals,” said Gombora.
Shanandra Chitewe (18), one of the outstanding goalies from the just-ended ZB-Baker’s Inn-sponsored annual ball games competition held at Visitation Makumbi in Domboshava, shared the same sentiments adding that soccer had the largest following in the country.
The Watermark Private School student also hailed the event’s organisers for helping school-going children in discovering their talents.
“We experienced top-notch football at Visitation. My mission is to play for the national side and help to put Zimbabwe back on the world football map,” said Chitewe.
Visitation Makumbi Mission School last weekend held the Visitation Annual Ball Games that saw more than 20 high schools taking part in various sporting disciplines ranging from basketball, handball, volleyball, netball to football. The event, which was co-sponsored by ZB Bank Borrowdale branch and Baker’s Inn, gave schools a chance to build strong teams for the soccer season.
Barnabas Nemaire, Watermark Private School sports director, said his little-known school from Rusape got a rare chance to participate in the competition and did not disappoint.
“Watermark could be the next soccer powerhouse to watch out for, it has improved both on the sports field as well as academically and that alone is quite impressive,” said Nemaire.
Watch out for powerhouses like Cranborne, Churchill, Harare High, Kutama, Pamushana, Watermark and Marist Brothers among others as they are set to compete in the Copa-Coca- Cola tourney soon.
