Scottland and N’ombeyawora chase history together

TWO clubs born from the same Mabvuku vision are rewriting Zimbabwean football history. Scottland and their sister side N’ombeyawora, both linked to Mabvuku legislator Scott Sakupwanya, are on parallel paths that few could have predicted.

Scottland’s rise already reads like a modern football fairytale. Two years ago, they were just another ambitious side in the Northern Region Soccer League (NRSL). They won promotion at the first attempt.

Now, in their maiden Premier Soccer League (PSL) campaign, they are leading the title race, chasing a feat last seen when Black Rhinos won the championship straight after promotion in 1984.

They briefly stretched their lead on Friday despite a 1-0 defeat to Manica Diamonds, going two points clear of Simba Bhora, who have a game in hand because of Caf Champions League commitments.

“We want to keep pushing and stay top,” said coach Tonderai Ndiraya. “The only way to do that is to focus on what we’re doing, not on other teams. Simba Bhora are playing elsewhere, and while their result could matter, it won’t count for much if we don’t win our own games. We are not paying much attention to that, we are just focused on giving our best in our last five matches.”

If Scottland’s climb has stunned the PSL, N’ombeyawora’s charge is equally dramatic. In their debut NRSL season, they have powered to the top of the table and could match Scottland’s back-to-back promotions if they hold their nerve.

Coach Nesbert “Yabo” Saruchera made no attempt to downplay their ambition. “We have never hidden our intentions. We started by assembling a strong squad, and we are happy with the progress so far,” he said.

What makes this story remarkable is not just the simultaneous success but the shared DNA. Both clubs were built with the same ambition and a clear plan to rise. They have mirrored each other almost step for step, creating a rare double narrative of triumph that is captivating local football.

For fans, the question now is whether the fairytale will have a double happy ending: Scottland lifting the PSL crown at the first attempt and N’ombeyawora sealing their own promotion. If that happens, Zimbabwean football will witness a piece of history that few would have dared to script.
