Scottland sack Norman Mapeza

SCOTTLAND have sacked coach Norman Mapeza (pictured) after defeat to Petro de Luanda in the CAF Champions League last Friday.

The decision is with immediate effect.

Although no official communication had been made by the club as of last night, Zimpapers Sports Hub understands the decision has been made, and the coach’s camp has been informed.

Insiders say the defeat in the second leg of the second preliminary round was the last straw.

Scottland had taken a 2-0 lead in the first leg before failing to stamp their authority in the second half.

As things stand, this could be a disastrous season for the champions, who are now not guaranteed the league title while at the same time are out of the African Safari.

“It was agreed before the team even came back, but communication has been made today. Yes, it was not an easy decision, but they had no choice but to pull the trigger,” said an insider.

The coach’s manager, Gibson Mahachi, also confirmed they had received a letter.

“The decision is with immediate effect. But we are yet to sit down with the club to discuss termination. That is all I can say,” he said.

Going into the CAF Champions League match, Zimpapers Sports Hub understands that was the coach’s last chance to save his job.

With Hardrock winning yesterday against MWOS, it means Scottland are now eight points behind their rivals, and only a miracle will save the Mabvuku-based side even though they have two games in hand.

Critics say, despite the massive investment made, being coach at Scottland means a lot of pressure.

“There is no doubt that Honourable Scott has introduced a club with high levels of professionalism. Actually, he has changed the game in the country with his investment.

“But it must also be highlighted that they are not as efficient as they should be. There are many centres of power when he is not around. The next coach will come, and will face the same challenges. So, that may need to be addressed as well.”

Scottland face CAPS United on Thursday, and Mapeza will not be in charge with four games to go before the end of the season.
