KELVIN MOYO is rarely a player who gets into the spotlight.
Yet few can quite match the quiet consistency of the Scottland defender.
Three league titles already decorate his cabinet and a fourth now hangs tantalisingly close.
Moyo, who lifted the Castle Lager Premier Soccer League (PSL) crown with FC Platinum in 2017, 2018 and 2019, could join elite company if Scottland clinch the championship this season.
It would not just be another medal for him; it would be history.
No team has ever won the league in their debut season since Black Rhinos’ fairytale triumph in 1984.
Forty-one years later, Scottland are on the verge of achieving the same feat.
For Moyo, it has been a season of quiet endurance.
He has featured in all of Scottland’s 31 games, clocking over 2 790 minutes.
He also seems determined to see out the entire 34.
But personal records, he insists, mean little compared to the ultimate prize.
“This is a big opportunity for us to make history, and I think we have the experience and capacity to achieve this feat,” he said.
Scottland have built their campaign on steel and structure.
Their defence, the stingiest in the league, has conceded just 18 goals.
Up front, their 40 strikes are unmatched, and they top the table with 62 points.
This afternoon, at Ascot Stadium, they face Kwekwe United, a side already relegated and has one of the league’s worst defensive records, having shipped in 68 goals.
Still, Moyo knows better than to underestimate them.
“We expect the game to be tough because Kwekwe United have nothing to lose and will play freely. They also have some good youngsters who are out to prove themselves,” he said.
The 32-year-old centre-back is one of several seasoned campaigners anchoring the Scottland dream. Goalkeeper Nelson Chadya, full-back Ronald Pfumbidzai, forward Walter Musona and striker Tymon Machope all know what it takes to win championships.
That experience, Moyo believes, has steadied the club’s debut campaign.
“This team is new in the league, although there are several players in the team who have massive Premiership experience. This one is going to be very special — it’s Scottland’s first season in the Premiership; it’s also my first season at the team,” he said.
For Moyo, what makes this chase even more meaningful is the belief of their club owner, Scott Sakupwanya.
“It will be special because we would have surpassed the expectations that our boss Sakupwanya had. He just wanted us to play and stay in the PSL and maybe finish in the top five or top four, but here we are on the verge of winning the championship. So, winning the title would be a special present to our boss, Sakupwanya,” Moyo added.
His form has also thrust him into the conversation for this year’s Soccer Star of the Year award, alongside Dynamos’ Emmanuel Jalai and Simba Bhora’s Emmanuel Ziocha.
Yet, as ever, Moyo keeps his focus.
“For now, my focus is on the game against Kwekwe United. We have to remain united and focused. But I would like to thank Sakupwanya for giving us this opportunity. He has made things smooth because of the investment he has made.”
If Scottland pull it off, they will break a four-decade-old record and etch their name beside that of the fabled 1984 Black Rhinos side, a team led by Shepherd Murape and Ashton “Papa” Nyazika, which also had greats like Stanford “Stix” Mtizwa, Maronga “The Bomber” Nyangela, Stanley Ndunduma, Hamid Dhana and Japhet Mparutsa.
Mtizwa, one of that team’s icons, sees something familiar in Scottland’s run.
“It was so overwhelming getting promoted and winning the title in 1984. We had two great coaches and a number of good players like Dhana, Ndunduma and Nyangela. I also feel Scottland have a powerful squad that can match what we did back in 1984,” Mtizwa told Zimpapers Sports Hub.
The weight of history sits heavy on Scottland’s shoulders today. But if there is one man who knows how to handle pressure, it is Kelvin Moyo — the quiet sentinel who may soon lift a fourth league crown, this time for a club writing its first chapter in gold.
