Sculptor-turned-musician launches debut album

Terrence Benhura has broken a family tradition with the launch of his inspirational debut album titled “Murombo Munhu”.

For long, the Benhura family has been known for producing fine artists, especially sculptors, but Terrence has taken a different route.

“I enjoy music more than sculpture,” the 34-year-old singer enthused.

It was his passion for music that made his uncle Dominic Benhura to throw his weight behind the youngster who also passed through the renowned sculptor’s hands when he enrolled at the Dominic Studios in Greendale.

Much more than a musician, Terrence is also a pastor from his church.

For him music is a vehicle through which he spreads the gospel.

“Basically, I sing gospel music although I fuse different genres since I have worked with different artistes on this album. I worked with Kenyan and Sierra Leonean producers,” he said.

But his uncle Dominic sees his music in a different light.

“For me it was about creating employment. Terrence leads a 10-member band and these youths could have been doing nothing or the worst case, committing crime. But here they are making music,” Dominic said.

The world renowned sculptor said it was also good that Terrence, his nephew proved his great passion for music which was different.

Backed by Passions Entertainment, Terrence said he was thankful of the support from Dominic who made sure his dream came true.

The group has Allan Manjoro, Innocent Sakala, Blessing Rwodzi, Onesai Kapatamoyo, Jeddiah Nkala as the instrumentalists. Plug tracks on the eight-track album include “Mukai”, which is the first track, “Dai Tanamata”, ”Ramangwana” as well as the title track.

The album launch held at Picabello Restaurant in Highlands, saw Sekuru Gweshe as the opening act.

The 76-year-old mbira player wished Terrence well in his music career.

“I think he has a bright future for as long he remains level-headed. I am enjoying curtain-raising for him and I can tell he started on a sound footing,” Sekuru Gweshe said.
