Former Miss Tourism Zimbabwe Malaika Mushandu, who was looking classy as usual in a short white dress, applauded the initiative saying it goes a long way in defining Zimbabwean beauty.
“This move is highly commendable because Zimbabwe has diverse beauty and such a development highlights and celebrates the local beauty trademark. Black Opal range caters for different skin shades and having a local face will go a long way in helping women relate to the brand,” she said.
Bulawayo-based Oslie Matsikinyere praised the move and said it had been a long way coming.
“It’s about time for Zimbabwe because we had been lagging behind in promoting a unique identity. Other countries have been promoting their products with local personalities”, she said.
Tatenda Mutseyekwa, Black Opal Zimbabwe marketing director, said all local women were free to participate in the competition to select the brand’s local ambassador.
“All interested Zimbabwean women above the age of 16 years can compete to be the face of BOZ. It does not matter if they are married, divorced, curvy, tall or short since it is the face that we are looking at. We celebrating Zimbabwean beauty so there is no discrimination against anyone,” he said.
To ensure fairness and equal representation Mutseyekwa said the whole nation will be engaged in the selection process through different voting platforms.
He said: “How this competition is going to run is by having women send in their photos every month for the next three months. The photos will then be published in the local Press and the public will vote for their favourite faces through text messages and the social media platforms.
“Three contestants with the most votes each month will then battle it out on the ramp at the grand finale to choose the faceof BOZ. The ultimate winner will not only become face of Black Opal Zimbabwe but will win a week-long trip to New York for two with US$3 000 spending money.
“She will also go on site visits courtesy of the Black Opal USA, among other prizes.”
The event was a red carpet affair with socialites and corporates dressed to impress.
A mbira group — Madzinza Embira — capped the event with a top-drawer performance that had the crowd singing along and dancing.
