Kwekwe City’s water supply dam, Sebakwe, is 75 percent full and the water levels are enough to sustain the local authority’s water needs and that of its sister town, Redcliff, for the next 12 months, an official has said.
In an interview, Kwekwe Mayor Councillor Angeline Kasipo said the only challenge that the local authority was facing was that of forex shortages to buy water treatment chemicals.
Kwekwe City has of late been experiencing erratic water supplies, raising fears that the water challenges could be as a result of dwindling water levels in the city supply dam.
Cllr Kasipo allayed fears that the city could face water shortages, saying the water levels at the supply dam was enough to sustain the city for the next 12 months.
“Unlike in other cities where we hear that the water levels at their supply dams were reaching critical levels, we have enough water at our supply dam which can take us through the next 12 months,” she said.
“We had our full councill meeting recently and the report that we got was that our supply dam was 75 percent full. So we are safe.”
Cllr Kasipo said the water challenges that were experiencing were due to pump breakdowns, as well as a shortage of water treatment chemicals.
“As the city council, we strive to provide desired service delivery and constant water supply is one of the obligations of council,” he said. “We, however, face challenges here and there to do with water treatment chemicals. We at times also experience some breakdown of pumps at the water works.”
Cllr Kasipo thanked local companies that have been assisting council in getting water treatment chemicals.
“We have companies that always bail us out when we run out of water treatment chemicals so we need to appreciate that,” she said.
Cllr Kasipo said Kwekwe City was planning to introduce a separate bulk meter to bill Redcliff Town Council.
She said Redcliff’s water bill was continuing to balloon and a separate prepaid bulk meter was the only way to get the pay.
