Scope of project: Construction of a 70-metre-high double curvature concrete dam 

Capacity: 140 million cubic metres 

Project cost: US$264 million

Type of Dam: Roller compacted dam. Initially it was Rock Fill Dam

Progress to date

λ Clear and strip borrow areas and dam wall 90,6 percent

λ Soft dam excavation 90 percent 

λ Hard dam excavations 52 percent

λ Tunnel and shaft excavations 39,5 percent

The new inland water body covers a catchment area of 4500km2 and has a full supply capacity of 260 000ML.

λ Crest access roads (left and right bank) 90 percent

λ Storm water drains 93 percent

λ U/S Coffer Dam Construction 25 percent

Overall progress: 42 percent

Benefits of the dam

i) Rushinga Growth Point water supply 

ii) Agriculture – up to 12 000 hectares of land to be irrigated

iii) Fisheries to boost incomes and nutrition 

iv) Recreational facilities (tourism) around the dam 

v)  Small hydro-power station to be set up for power generation

vi) More employment opportunities. About 130 already employed at dam construction site
