SO indebted to Highlanders is Zenzo Moyo that he would have taken up any role at Bosso, even if the duties included sweeping at the club’s offices.
The former Highlanders and national team striker has bounced back as club team manager, several years after starring for Bosso, where he won both the league title and the Soccer Star of the Year award. Moyo is now part of a technical team headed by former Manchester City striker and Highlanders’ junior player Benjani Mwaruwari.
Coincidentally, Moyo and Mwaruwari played together for Bosso’s junior teams before they went separate ways.
While Moyo blossomed into a gunman of repute at Highlanders, Mwaruwari took another path, starting off his senior career at Air Zimbabwe Jets before moves to Jomo Cosmos, Grasshoppers, Auxerre, Portsmouth and Manchester City.
“I am very happy to be back at Highlanders because they are a very big club in Zimbabwean football. When Bosso come calling, you can’t deny them. Even if they had said come and do sweeping in the offices I would not have refused, as long as it helped the club,” Moyo told Zimpapers Sports Hub.
The 50-year-old Moyo is undoubtedly a Highlanders legend.
He is a multiple winner of the Premier Soccer League title with Bosso and was also crowned Soccer Star of the Year in 2000.
Moyo won the 2002 PSL Golden Boot, after banging 21 goals as Bosso won a fourth championship in a row.
He also played top-flight football in Cyprus and Greece.
“Highlanders made me, that’s not a secret.
“Bosso fans are just amazing, they have been there for the club in good and bad times,” said Moyo. Highlanders’ fans packed Barbourfields last Sunday when Bosso hosted Dynamos in the Jairos Jiri Charity Cup.
Bosso lifted the Cup after a narrow 1-0 victory and what happened soon after the final whistle was emotional.
Moyo, who commands a lot of respect from the Bosso fans, persuaded coach Mwaruwari to go and salute supporters housed in the famous Soweto End Stand. Mwaruwari appeared reluctant but Moyo insisted the gesture had to be done.
“Soweto End is the heartbeat of Highlanders Football Club.
“So, it’s important for a coach to connect with this Stand,” Moyo said.
However, Moyo is tipping Mwaruwari to shine at Highlanders.
“Me taking Benjie (Mwaruwari) to the Soweto End was not about me going there to endorse him or trying to show off but I wanted the coach to greet the supporters.
“I think they received him well.”
The former AEP Paphos striker also clarified Mwaruwari’s connection with Highlanders.
“We played together at junior level, he is indeed a former player of Highlanders,” said Moyo.
