Songstress, Selmor Mtukudzi is embracing this month as a special time to celebrate her late father, Oliver “Tuku” Mtukudzi.
The legendary musician and national hero was born on September 22, 1952, in Highfield, Harare.
Over the years, a number of activities have been organised to commemorate Tuku’s legacy. However, Selmor felt unable to honour him as fully as she desired until now.
The impact of Tuku’s death on January 23, 2019, continues to be deeply felt by both his fans and family.
To ease her sorrows and celebrate with her father’s friends and fans in the sub-region and locally, Selmor will headline three events dedicated to Tuku this month.
On September 13, she will perform at Hard Rock Café in Johannesburg, South Africa, followed by the Tuku Trail Half Marathon set for Wingate Boat Club on the shores of Lake Chivero.
She will also headline the “Dr Oliver Mtukudzi Tribute Show” scheduled for September 26 at Alliance Francaise in Lusaka, Zambia.
In an interview with Zimpapers Arts and Entertainment Hub, Selmor, who breaks down each time she remembers her father, revealed she and her late father’s friends are ready to honour Tuku in the best way possible.
“The morale in our camp is high. I have wanted to do this for a long time, and I’m happy that it’s finally going to happen. I’m excited to celebrate his legacy through music and other events.
“In Zambia and South Africa, I’m promising my fans an unforgettable experience celebrating Tuku’s music and legacy.
“I’m looking forward to connecting with my fans and paying tribute to my father’s impact on the music world. I last performed in Zambia in 2020 and in South Africa in 2022. The response is always amazing. The audiences there really love Zimbabwean music and have so much respect for us,” Selmor said.
