Sen Muzerengwa said there are many parliamentarians with many other wives and girlfriends, but were not open about it.
“I openly married my wives,” he said.
“Some of my colleagues in Parliament pretend to be in monogamous marriages, yet they cheat on their wives, risking the spread of the deadly HIV and Aids.”
In fact, Sen Muzerengwa says officially marrying many wives can help prevent the spread of the deadly virus.
“Contrary to assertions that multiple partners spread HIV and Aids, this actually helps reduce the spread of the disease as one is confined to his official spouses unlike those in monogamous marriages who often cheat on their spouses,” he said.
“How many legislators are in Parliament and have one spouse, but are sick of HIV and Aids right now?”
Sen Muzerengwa, a member of the Johanne Marange apostolic sect, said he was a proud and able polygamist.
He said his “marriages” are covered by both the African tradition and his church’s doctrine.
“I have got 10 wives and 57 children and our church doctrine allows us to marry many wives.
“It is also part of the African culture for one to have as many wives as he wishes.
“I am an African, not a white man. I am a polygamist and that is part of our African culture as Zimbabweans.”
Sen Muzerengwa said his wives are happy with the polygamous arrangement.
“I give each and everyone of them their conjugal rights as and when they need them,” he said.
“They are now used to it and I do not have any problems at all.”
Sen Muzerengwa said his big family depended on agriculture for survival.
“We grow sugarcane, bananas and tomatoes. Besides, I am also gainfully employed,” he said.
Sen Muzerengwa said his marital status had nothing to do with his being a legislator.
He married all his wives before he was elected into the Upper House.
Sen Muzerengwa’s neighbours in Mawire Village under Chief Nyashanu said they were not really sure of how many wives he had.
Some claimed he had 13, while others said he had up to 21.
“He has quite a big number of wives,” said a neighbour.
“We do not even know how many children he has, but they are many.”
