Senior police officer convicted of stealing exhibits

The police officer, Inspector Hardway Munyaradzi Kasu (38), who is the officer-in-charge of Central Investigation Department (CID), had pleaded not guilty to the charge of stealing more than 300 Pounds cash kept at the police station as an exhibit.

Mrs Matuvi, however, found Kasu guilty after she found overwhelming evidence against him.

Kasu, who has been out of custody on $50 bail, was remanded in custody to today for sentencing.

For the State, Miss Yeukayi Mugumba told the court that on 18 February this year, Kwekwe District Criminal Investigation officer Superintendent Walter Hita visited Kasu’s office on routine duties to check some exhibits which were kept at the station. Miss Mugumba said while checking the records, Supt Hita discovered that on 16 February this year, one suspect was arrested and cash amounting to £305, R20 and $50 was recorded in the exhibit book in order of its serial numbers.

Ms Mugumba said on checking the serial numbers, Supt Hita discovered that Kasu had used the original exhibit money and replaced it with other notes with different serial numbers. The matter was reported at the same police station leading to the arrest of Kasu.

During the trial Kasu said there was bad blood between him and his boss Supt Hita.

He, however, admitted during cross examination that he took the original exhibit money and replaced it with another and was in the process of making a formal report to that effect when he was arrested.
