Serena cruises into third round

Serena Williams was in no mood to join the exodus of top names at Wimbledon as she swept past French teenager Caroline Garcia in round two.
The American (31), showed no sign of following leading rivals Victoria Azarenka and Maria Sharapova out of the tournament, winning 6-3, 6-2 on Centre Court.
Williams is trying to win a sixth Wimbledon singles title, and has now extended her career-best winning run to 33 matches.
She will next play Japan’s Kimiko Date-Krumm, who beat Alexandra Cadantu 6-4, 7-5 to become the oldest woman, at the age of 42, to reach Wimbledon’s third round since the open era began in 1969.

“She is inspiring and she’s so fit,” Williams told BBC Sport. “I’ve never played her before, but I watched her when I was super young.”
Williams dropped just three points on serve in the first set against 19-year-old Garcia, and was equally impressive on the return, with two thumping forehands earning her a break in game five.

Garcia dumped an inviting forehand into the net when facing a third set point, but the former junior world number one battled hard in the second.
Williams clenched her fist when she made the key breakthrough to lead 4-2, and Garcia swung a backhand wide to give the American victory after one hour and seven minutes.

“I think Caroline’s a really good player,” added Williams. “I played her at the French Open and she played really well, so it was good to get another win today.

“I really love these moments when I’m out there. I live and die for these moments and it’s really fun.”
Polish fourth seed Agnieszka Radwanska, last year’s runner-up, beat Mathilde Johansson of France 6-1, 6-3, and sixth seed Li Na of China beat Romanian Simona Halep 6-2, 1-6, 6-0.

There were early wins for 14th seed Sam Stosur and 23rd seed Sabine Lisicki, who will meet in round three.
Australian Stosur beat Olga Puchkova of Russia 6-2, 6-2, while Germany’s Lisicki saw off Russian Elena Vesnina 6-1, 6-3.

Madison Keys, the 18-year-old American who beat Britain’s Heather Watson in round one, made further progress with a 6-4, 6-2 win over German 30th seed Mona Barthel. — BBC Sport
