Serena finds true love

Sharapova for the title.

The American top seed, who won her only Roland Garros crown on her last final appearance in 2002, will be playing in her 20th career Grand Slam championship showdown after stretching her current winning streak to 30 matches.

Defending champion Sharapova bludgeoned her way past Belarussian third seed Victoria Azarenka 6-1 2-6 6-4 to reach the final at Roland Garros yesterday.

The Russian second seed served 12 aces and 11 double faults in a see-saw contest.

The four-times grand-slam champion dropped serve in the first game before racing through the opener in less than half an hour, spraying Court Philippe Chatrier with forehand winners.

Double Australian Open champion Azarenka hit back to take the second set but lost her momentum after a 30-minute rain interruption, Sharapova wrapping it up on her fifth match point after two hours 10 minutes.

The 30 consecutive victories of Williams tell of someone who could not be happier or more motivated, and a major reason for that is becoming increasingly apparent.

Her coach Patrick Mouratoglou posted a picture of them on Wednesday, arms entwined, at Tuesday’s prestigious ITF Champions’ Dinner, seeming to confirm one of the worst-kept secrets in tennis: that theirs goes well beyond a pure player-coach relationship.

Results have reflected the stability he has brought to her, and after just two defeats all year Williams went into yesterday’s semi-final of the French Open against Italy’s Sara Errani a very strong favourite.

Whatever it is between her and her coach, it is clearly working for Serena, who in the space of a year has gone from suffering her worst loss at a Grand Slam to sweeping all before her, coinciding with her hooking up alongside one of Europe’s most high-profile coaches.

Williams’ career appeared to be unwinding when she went out to the little-known Virginie Razzano in the French Open 12 months ago and turned to Mouratoglou, who runs his eponymous academy on the outskirts of Paris that has seen many players come through its doors, including Laura Robson for a spell.

Since teaming up with him, Williams has won Wimbledon, the Olympics and US Open and much of this must be put down to the influence of the debonair 42-year-old.

The evolution of their relationship has been shrouded in mystery but what is known is that he was until relatively recently married, which is no longer the case. — Mailonline.
