Serena, Novak top seeds for US Open

Washington — Serena Williams and Novak Djokovic will be the top seeds in the women’s and men’s singles draw at the US Open.

Williams, who remains No 1 in the world, is a six-time US Open winner and unsurprisingly takes top seed in the women’s draw after winning 33 out of her 38 matches this year.

Another grand slam victory at Flushing Meadows would see Williams pass Steffi Graff as the woman with the most major titles in the Open era.

Like Williams, Djokovic is the top ranked men’s player in the world and it came as no surprise to see him confirmed as top seed for the tournament that starts on August 29.

The Serbian goes into the US Open with a record of 51-5 in 2016 after another remarkable year to date, in which he has landed two grand slams in Australia and France.

Andy Murray takes second spot behind Djokovic after his Wimbledon and Olympic heroics, while Stan Wawrinka, Rafa Nadal and Milos Raonic make up the rest of the top five. Roger Federer misses the tournament due to injury.

In the women’s draw, Angelique Kerber, who won this year’s Australian Open title, takes second seeding followed by Garbiñe Muguruza, Agnieszka Radwanska and Simona Halep.

Serena’s sister Venus Williams just misses out on the top five but the sixth seed will be confident she has a chance, having won the tournament two times previously. — Sport24.
