Serial thief with previous convictions sentenced for motorcycle and cellphone theft

A 37-YEAR-OLD Nyanga, Manicaland Province resident traded freedom for prison bars after stealing a motorcycle and cellphone.

In August 2024, Bester Dziwema and his unnamed accomplice broke into the complainant’s home and made off with a black Lifan Motorcycle parked in the yard.

Dziwema was arrested and he guided detectives to Rusape, hoping to recover the stolen motorcycle and apprehend his accomplice.

However, the operation yielded no results, as both the motorcycle and accomplice remain at large.

Dziwema’s crime spree continued with a cell phone theft on 10 September 2024 where he targeted an unsuspecting homeowner and made off with an Itel A58 cell phone left vulnerable on a motorcycle.

The case took a breakthrough turn when the complainant received a tip-off that the accused person’s wife was using his stolen cell phone.

Acting swiftly, members of CID Inyanga responded to the information and apprehended the Dziwema and the stolen cell phone was recovered from his wife.

The National Prosecuting Authority of Zimbabwe (NPAZ) in a statement on X, said, “Bester Dziwema (37) from Nyanga was arraigned before the Nyanga Magistrates’ Court facing two counts of theft.
“The State proved that sometime in August 2024 the accused person and his accomplice who is still at large went to the complainant’s place of residence and stole a black Lifan motorcycle which was parked in the yard and went away unnoticed. The detectives arrested the accused person who then led them to Rusape where he had left the motorcycle to be sold by his accomplice but they did not find him and the motorcycle. The value of the stolen property was US$900 and nothing was recovered.

“On 10 September 2024, the accused person went to another homestead and stole an Itel A58 cell phone which was left on a motorcycle and connected to the charger and went away unnoticed. The matter came to light when the complainant received information to the effect that the accused person’s wife was using his missing cell phone. Member of CID Inyanga reacted to the information and arrested the accused person and the cell phone was recovered from his wife. The value of the stolen property was US$45 and all was recovered.
The accused person was sentenced to 24 months imprisonment of which 6 months was suspended on the usual conditions. A further 6 months were suspended on condition that the accused person restitute US$ 900 to the complainant. Another 2 months which had been suspended on another charge were brought into effect and the accused person will serve 14 months imprisonment.”
