adminaverage of between one and three hours to clear their cars. It had become a nightmare for many car dealers and individuals to get their customs documents for vehicles processed by Zimra. They were reportedly spending between two and seven days to get the whole clearance process completed.
Zimra blamed the slow processing to the understaffing of the vehicles section. Under the standard customs procedure it should take only an hour for an individual to get their cars cleared with Zimra depending on the availability of the requisite documents.
It is understood Zimra had been working with eight officers per shift but that has increased to between 10 and 13.
Car imports are being handled at two bonded warehouses, Manica and Nerry Investments.
Car dealers and individuals who spoke to The Herald yesterday said they were happy with the rate at which vehicle imports were being handled.
Zimra’s director of legal and corporate affairs, Ms Florence Jambwa, confirmed they had deployed more officers to the vehiclessection in a bid to ensure efficiency.
