Serving animals from getting extinct

THERE are a lot of people working really hard to protect many animals from extinction, but the conservation efforts might be not enough and we can really lose many animals and plants in years to come. However, as many animals are on the verge of extinction due to human existence, the positive relationship between humans, crows and monkeys at Mutare Teachers’ College is increasing.

The world is facing many different ecological problems causing the decline in population of many animal species. Animals are losing their habitats because human beings need more land and this has created huge biodiversity loss in many parts of the world.

However, taking a closer look at the college environment, with too many people in a small area, a lot of efforts are being put. The population of monkeys and crows are increasing almost daily since 2009. The relationship between these animals and human beings (mostly students) is becoming stronger and stronger.

The most interesting part in this relationship is that what is said ‘waste’ by students from the kitchen and all foodstuffs taken by students in hostels is taken as food by monkeys and crows. This is the major factor which attracts the animals to stay permanently at the college.

Another effort being put by the college stakeholders to create a conducive environment for the animals is watering of flowers and plants. Trees dotted around the college are a good habitat of monkeys and crows. This is the vice-versa of what is happening outside the college in very nearby environments where fire and other human activities are destroying habitat for these animals.

Also naturally, the co-existence of students and staff with animals is also shaping the ecosystem. However, all hard work can be lost in almost one blink of an eye if something unpredictable happens, and modern ecology is sadly full of negative surprises these days.
In contrast with this, the interaction of people with animals at Mutare teachers is promoting a positive growth of animals.

Although Mutare Teachers’ College is doing well in conserving its flora and fauna, the country as a whole should also make efforts in conserving the ecosystem.
As Zimbabweans we need to take care and protect animals from extinction despite the environmental mess that has been created over the years.
