CABINET has received and approved a memorandum on the Constitutional Amendment Bill of 2026, which seeks to extend presidential terms from five years to seven years, among other proposed measures.

Speaking at a post-Cabinet media briefing in Harare today, Minister of Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services, Dr Jenfan Muswere said the Bill also provides for the repealing of Section 92 of the Constitution to allow the President to be elected by a joint sitting of Parliament.

Dr Muswere said the proposed amendments are meant to ensure policy continuity, allow for the completion of several ongoing national projects and avoid election-related disruptions.

“The memorandum proposes a series of legal reforms to strengthen constitutional Governance, clarify institutional roles, promote social-economic and political stability and also to enhance the efficiency of State architecture,” he said.
