THE Meteorological Services Department has issued a warning of a continued cold spell in Zimbabwe, with severe ground frost in most parts of the country.
The ground frost is expected to be accompanied by very cold overnight and early morning conditions in Harare, Tsholotsho, Matopos, Henderson, Kadoma, Lupane, Gweru, Marondera, Mukandi, Chivhu and Nyanga.
Mostly sunny conditions are expected during the day, and temperatures should rise towards the mild category in the afternoon before dropping to the cool category towards evening.
This is a Level 2 warning out of 10, with high likelihood but minor impacts, mainly in frost-prone areas and on frost-sensitive crops and livestock.
The Met department advised that precautionary measures be taken to minimise effects of the ground frost.
The Met also said the advection of very cold and relatively dry air from the southwest of Zimbabwe, through both Matabeleland provinces, was causing a decline in dew point temperatures in the western parts of the country.
“Dry air has a decreased ability to store heat as compared to moist air.
“This coupled with clear skies and fairly calm winds should result in a decrease in overnight temperatures into the very cold category for areas in the western parts of the country and along the Highveld,” the department said.
