POLICE have urged Bulawayo residents to take greater responsibility for the safety of children in their communities amid growing concerns over sexual abuse cases involving minors.
The warning comes amid several reported cases of minors being sexually abused in Bulawayo, raising concerns over child protection and the need for stronger community vigilance.
Inspector Prince Ndlovu from the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) Victim Friendly Unit said parents and guardians must be alert to the environments children are exposed to, especially those who are vulnerable, including children living with mental disabilities.
He said some children had fallen victim to sexual abuse because offenders took advantage of their vulnerability.
“Parents and guardians should always put the safety of children first. They must know where their children are, who they interact with and the routes they use when going to school,” Insp Ndlovu said.
He warned that children walking through isolated or bushy areas on their way to school could become easy targets for criminals.
“Where possible, children should be accompanied, especially if the route has areas where criminals can hide,” he said.
Inspector Ndlovu said communities should not wait until abuse occurred before taking action, urging residents to report suspicious behaviour.
He said victims of sexual abuse should report cases to the police as soon as possible to allow investigations and the arrest of suspects.
“Such cases should never be handled at home, even if the accused person is a relative or someone close to the family. A crime remains a crime,” he said.
The police officer highlighted that Victim Friendly Units were available at every police station to assist survivors and families dealing with sensitive cases.
He encouraged parents and guardians to break the culture of silence surrounding sexual abuse.
“People should talk to the police when they face such cases. We are there to assist and ensure justice is served,” he said.
Members of the public can report cases of child abuse, sexual offences and gender-based violence to the Victim
Friendly Unit on (0292) 889983 or via WhatsApp on 0789 401 080.
