Sexual rights activist skips bail . . . Warrant of arrest issued

A SEXUAL rights activist who has previously claimed that she is bi-sexual has a warrant of arrest opened against her after she skipped bail on charges of sexual misconduct.

36-year-old Nomvelo Moyo who is a known LGBTI rights activists based in Bulawayo and has had several run-ins with law enforcement officials over her activities in the city which include demonstrations and illegal awareness campaigns held in the city.

In the latest development, Moyo and a group of activists were meant to appear for a routine bail hearing where they were facing charges of sexual misconduct emanating from one of their activities where they went to some taxi ranks in the city some crossed dressed while others were dressed in skimpy attires.

Moyo, however failed to pitch up for her hearing resulting in Bulawayo magistrate Prince Ncube issuing a warrant of arrest on the spot.

According to the state case as present by public prosecutor, Leonard Chile, Moyo was the leader of the group of activists where they were going to the taxi ranks calling on the community to recognize and accept LGBTI.

At one point there was almost a stampede at Pick n Pay Hyper taxi rank where commuter omnibus touts and drivers were baying for the blood of the group accusing them of being ungodly and trying to taint their society.

Moyo was out on $500 bail.

This publication managed to speak to some of Moyo’s friends who attended the court hearing and they claimed, she had over the past few weeks claimed she was now living in fear.

“She was saying she feared for her child because she was now a target, we are not surprised that she has eventually disappeared because the last few weeks have been stressful for her,” said a friend who declined to be named fearing victimization.

Gays and lesbianism in the country is largely viewed with a cringed eye with former President Mugabe equating them to pigs.

The current regime under President Mnangagwa has also had a cringed relationship with members of the LGBTI community with a number of activists being arrested over the years.
