SHEPERD Makazhu is tipped to win the Shabanie Mine Supporters Association chairmanship elections tomorrow. Makazhu has been the vice-chairman for the past two years.“I want to take over the reigns and celebrate the 100 years of Shabanie Mine in style so that we remain a dominant force in the Premiership. We need to rally behind our sponsors, Pote, Samson Gondwe, the mine and our Harare based sponsors so that we remain a dominant force.
“The supporters executive last year did not respect the executive, they embezzled funds. In short they were very corrupt and achieved nothing and I now want to run the committee in a transparent manner,” alleged Makazhu.
A number of former members were suspended last year after funds meant for marshals were embezzled. There was also a battle that nearly spilled into the courts with Stephen Mbewe and Ruwizhi Phiri trying in vain to stop the elections meant for Saturday.
Makazhu is contesting against former Zvishavane chairman Alluwis Zhou for the powerful post at the asbestos mining town where soccer is more like a religion.
He has already secured a deal with a company that will supply regalia for the Shabanie Mine fans. Makazhu said he would provide transport for supporters to all away matches.
A Maglas based resident Siphelile Zini has already been declared the vice-chairperson after she was not challenged with Tawanda Nzembe unopposed for the treasurer’s post.
Six members namely Edgar Kamwendo, Joshua Sithole, Rangarirai Sharara, Perseverence Mabika, and Lawrence Makiwa are vying for the secretary’s post with Francis Hungwe and Phineas Mabheure eyeing the vice-secretary’s post.
William Mafa, Innocent Hungwe, Simbarashe Mutemeri want to be committee members for Mandava-Makwasha and Highlands respectively. There are only two posts available.
Zhou could not be reached for comment.
