BULAWAYO’S Phillip Tshuma and Brian Gondo had a shaky start on the first day of the Golden Pilsener Zambezi Tour Pre-Open Classic at the Royal Harare Golf Club yesterday where Tongo Charamba took leadership of proceedings with a five under par 68 score. A stroke behind was the duo of Ignatious Mketekete and Mick Hough who scored four under par 67 each ahead of today’s final round of 36 holes.
Tshuma and Gondo, of Bulawayo Golf Club, ended the day on position 11 and 36 after scoring a par 72 and five over par 77 respectively.
“I hit three fairways today but my teeing was a bit off line today. I also had a few putts that could have gone in but you know how this game is.
“I can only hope tomorrow (today) will be a better day for me,” said Tshuma last night.
The first day’s carding though was dominated by Chapman Golf Club players as they ended the day with five players in the top six.
Stuart Krog, Dale Howie and Tich Musemburi each scored a two under par 70 to underline their intention of sweeping the prize medal list in the
Zimbabwe Open Committee sponsored precursor to the prime golf tournament, the Golden Pilsener Zimbabwe Open Championship.
The Committee put in a package of $10,000 and the figure attracted a strong field of 51 professional golfers, among them two South Africans, Irvin Mazibuko and Thabang Simon as well as two Zambians, Madaliko Muthiya and Patrick Mwendapole.
Muthiya had a decent first day, ending eighth at one under par 71 while his countryman, Mwendapole finished 27th at four over par 76.
Mazibuko ended the day at 17th position with a score of one over par 73 while Simon scored five over par 77 to finish the day at position 31.
On ninth position with a score of one under par 71 was the defending champion Ryan Cairns.
